Halloween Safety

If your pets are afraid of the doorbell, perhaps you should sit on your porch while giving out candy. Make a quiet sunset porch party for the grownups!

If you are inside, try to keep your pets in a room away from the door so they won’t get scared and dart out. PLEASE make sure your pets have collars with proper ID and your phone number just in case.

We know that candy is great and they know that candy is great but it is a no-no for our four legged friends - especially chocolate. Keep that bowl for the bell ringers up high in between trick-or-treaters and keep the left overs safely locked away or in the refrigerator.

If you do suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

Pumpkins and decorative corn, although not toxic, can give your pets a tummy ache so keep away from the nibblers.

Carved pumpkins with candles inside can be dangerous if knocked over. Kittens find flames especially seductive and can be easily singed and not even realize it until it’s too late, so you should probably do without the candles until they are a little older (and wiser?)

Dress up is so much fun for us, but unless your pet tolerates this, it’s better avoid this - or dress them up briefly for that picture then give them their furry freedom. Make sure the costume doesn’t have any strings or lines that may choke your pet or small parts that may be swallowed. You might take pictures earlier in the week so they won’t have the double stress of dress up and the door ringing.
